2020 Ram EcoDiesel Review
If you’re looking for a pickup truck that’s efficient, powerful, and highly capable, then you’re in the right place with this 2020 Ram EcoDiesel Review. The diesel-powered engine for the Ram 1500 packs in plenty of punch, and we’re so excited to tell you all about it.
It’s a 3.0L V6 engine that generates the following:
- Horsepower: 260 horsepower
- Torque: 480 lb-ft
The delicate balance of low-horsepower, high-torque output does a lot to improve both efficiency and capability as you drive around Madison, Hamilton, and Smyrna, NY.

2020 Ram EcoDiesel Efficiency
Looking first at efficiency, we see that the EcoDiesel engine can take you pretty far between fill-ups, according to EPA-estimates:
- 4×2 MPG: 22 MPG city, 32 MPG highway
- 4×4 MPG: 21 MPG city, 29 MPG highway
With an EPA-estimated highway fuel efficiency of 32 MPG for 2-wheel drive models (4×2), this is clearly a great engine to have under the hood when you’re settling in for a long haul. A 4-wheel drivetrain (4×4) is available as well. This improves all-terrain handling and all-weather traction control while still keeping efficiency high for the class.
The EcoDiesel engine pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Towing Capacity for the 2020 Ram EcoDiesel
We’ve mentioned the high torque output and how that improves towing capacity, but instead of just telling you that, how about we show you the numbers:
- Maximum towing capacity: 12,560 pounds
The 2020 Ram 1500 can tow more than 12,500 pounds when properly equipped with the EcoDiesel engine. It reaches this maximum when paired with a 4×2 drivetrain and the Quad Cab body style. With the Crew Cab, it can tow a maximum of 9,950 pounds, also when properly equipped with 2-wheel drive.
If you’re going for optimal towing capability, we also recommend equipping your truck with the Max Tow Package. This includes a 10-inch axle, a Class IV hitch receiver, an integrated trailer brake controller, and 7×11-inch trailer tow mirrors.
When properly equipped with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine, the Ram 1500 can carry a payload of up to 2,040 pounds.
For maximum payload capabilities, you’ll also want to ensure that you choose the Quad Cab with the 6-foot, 4-inch box. There’s also a 5-foot, 7-inch box available with the Crew Cab. This configuration gets a maximum payload of 1,800 pounds when properly equipped. Here’s how the boxes differ in cargo capacity:
- 6-Foot, 4-inch box: 61.5 cubic feet
- 5-foot, 7-inch box: 53.9 cubic feet
In addition to the volume you can fit inside the cargo bed, you can pack smaller items, like tools, into the available RamBox® Cargo Management System. This places two additional storage units inside the walls of the bed. They include a 115-volt power outlet so that you can power up or charge your tools at the worksite.
Keep in mind that the available RamBox® Cargo Management System increases your cargo volume, but your Ram 1500 EcoDiesel payload capacity remains the same.
